Place names across Alaska are being updated with their indigenous version

For more information, check out Alaska Native Place Names (UAF): “The revised Indigenous Peoples and Languages of Alaska map contains approximately 270 Native place names covering all twenty of Alaska's Native languages. This represents the first time that such a broad range of Native names has been collected in one document.”

This site is not sponsored by any organization or entity. Content is collected from across the Internet and compiled to help those interested in the Gwich’in people, particularly those of the Yukon Flats in Interior Alaska.

Elders in Action

The Council of Athabascan Tribal Governments (CATG) in 2019 hosted the Yukon Flats Indigenous Language Revitalization Institute in Fort Yukon, Alaska. The Institute was designed to help elders work with language teachers to develop content for lessons.

Florence Newman (Arctic Village) and Clarence Alexander (Fort Yukon) discuss (in Gwich’in) things that fly.
